Intro
A common breed found in Denmark, the Danish Sport Pony has been the focus of serious work in Denmark during the last 30-40 years.
Origins
Initially Icelandic horses & Norwegian Fjord animals were used for children’s mounts in Denmark. As demand for a good sport pony grew, Denmark devoted resources to establishing solid bloodlines.
The Danish Sport Pony Breeding Association was formed in 1976 and dedicated to creating a uniform breed of riding ponies. This was achieved by crossing Connemaras, New Forest horses, Welsh stallions & Arabian horses.
Perhaps their most important breeding criteria was temperament, they wanted an animal who was to be trusted with their children.
