Intro
The Chaidamu pony is from the Mongolian family located in Dulan, Geermu and Wulan County in the Qinghai Province of China.
Origins
This breed is a descendant of the Mongolian horse and presumably still a type of the breed. It seems that desertification of the Chaidamu Basin for which they are named has led to a decline in their numbers. This area has traditionally been celebrated for animal breeding, from horses to sheep and yaks.
Genetically the Chaidamu is part of the Tibetan Plateau horse group and they are similar genetically to Hequ, Datong and Yushu animals.
According to the DAD-IS they are considered at risk and as of 2021 there were 6777 left.
