Yushu Horse

Intro

Also called Gaoyuan, Geji and Gejhua, the Yushu is a localized variery of the Tibetan Pony. Notable because they are one of the few Chinese breeds of horse that carry the champagne gene. Causing them to be the subject of several genetic studies. They can be found in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, Qinghai Province.

Origins

This breed is native to the Yushu region from which it takes it’s name. In the 1990’s the Chinese government did a study of the Yushu for meat production. It was concluded that they were not a desirable food source, so the locals were encouraged to breed yaks instead.
