Burguete Horse

Intro

Named for the municipality from which it came, The Burguete is a strain of the Navarra Horse found in northeastern Spain. This is considered one of the Basque breeds.

Origins

This particular strain was established in the 19th century, using Jaca Navarra as a foundation, with as addition of various French draft breeds, including but not limited to Breton, Pecheron, Ardennais and Comtois. The breeding objective was essentially size, as this breed is bred primarily for meat.

Officially recognized by the government as a breed in 1979 and an association formed by 1999. In 2001 their studbook was officially established and recognized. Today the DAD-IS lists them as vulnerable, but their numbers are increasing, as of 2023 they were 7457 strong.
