Intro
The Clydesdale is a heavy draft breed native to Scotland. At some point they made their way across the ocean and American breeders took notice of their handsome conformation and robust nature.
Origins
Originating in the middle of the 18th century, when Flemish stallions were imported to Scotland with the goal of producing more robust animals out of local stock. They were imported by a Duke who allowed his tenants to cover their mares free of charge. The resulting animals were hardy and useful, encouraging further breeding.
It is unclear when they were brought to the USA, but it was likely early in the 20th century when Scotland was at peak draft horse production and commonly exporting. Today they are known for their Budweiser connection, with flashy action and handsome feathers they make spectacular carriage teams. Loved not only for their noble bearing, they have a temperament to match.
