Castile soap originated in the Castile region of Spain and was made from local olive oil. The term has evolved to encompass soap made from vegetable-based oils.
Products made from Castile soap do not use animal products (ew, tallow) as a softening agent. This means they biodegrade faster and require less from Mother Earth to be made.

Although I’ve managed to track down a number of great green horse products and feed, I wanted to provide resources for products we use and consume when we aren’t on our horses too.
As animal lovers and owners we have a responsibility to animals everywhere to use products that have the least amount of impact on the environment and the critters that depend on it.
I’m not saying it’s an easy commitment but it is one that everyone needs to make before it’s too late. I’m here to help and I’ve tracked down a number of great companies who make everything from cleaning products, to socks to makeup.

Society in general has been wasteful for far too long and we’ve hit a tipping point where the weight of the world literally lies on the shoulders of every one of us.
The main problem most people have with natural and sustainable products is the higher price tag associated with them.
Money doesn’t grow on trees you say. And to that I reply, it’s a small price to pay, if we don’t do something soon there will be no trees left anyway…

Perhaps it is ironic that anyone who wants to ride a horse would swear off of animal products altogether. But research shows me that there are some equestrian vegans & vegetarians out there who want to find non-leather tack options.
My question is this, I understand why you don’t want to use leather, but are synthetic products really better?
Synthetic products are generally made from chemicals & petroleum which come from big chemical & petroleum companies. Chances are these companies pollute ecosystems, and destroy the habitat of whole species. Just because it’s not made from animals doesn’t mean it is animal or earth friendly.

It’s amazing how many products wind up in a horse owners stockpile, everything from wormers to fly sprays to shampoo.
When choosing products, consider the health of everyone involved and when you can buy organic, natural and sustainable. In today’s chemical landscape no price is too dear to pay, lucky for us there are still good ones out there and their prices are reasonable.
Let’s face it, people domesticated horses long before chemicals were invented. There are natural ways to keep your animal healthy and they can be responsibly sourced. Everyone can do their part by supporting the companies who share that mantra.

I had fun with dog week, so I decided to take the idea and go a step further. In my own research to find ethical animal and earth friendly products I realize how little information there is out there for horse owners who want a clean lifestyle too.
I’ve already started by hunting down a list of natural and organic feed an treats and this week I’ve got lots more in store.
For those of us who love animals there is a constant dilemma over the products we consume, both for ourselves and for our pets (large & small).
