Intro
A common breed found in Denmark, the Danish Sport Pony has been the focus of serious work in Denmark during the last 30-40 years.
Origins
Initially Icelandic horses and Norwegian Fjord animals were used for children’s mounts in Denmark. As demand for a good sport pony grew, Denmark devoted resources to establishing solid bloodlines.
The Danish Sport Pony Breeding Association was formed in 1976 and dedicated to creating a uniform breed of riding ponies. This was achieved by crossing Connemaras, New Forest horses, Welsh stallions and Arabian horses.
Perhaps their most important breeding criteria was temperament, they wanted an animal who was to be trusted with their children.
