This was an artist I had never heard of until I discovered these sketches. More than just horses, Pisanello had a passion for sketching whatever was in front of him. Be sure to check out Pt. 1 & Pt. 2.
A True Perfectionist
From his work it is evident that he wanted to represent his subjects as lifelike as possible. It’s clear he spent time studying the equine form in action and that he did a lot of sketching in the field. I probably say it every time, but there is something very Leonardo-esk about his work (especially these).
The End of An Era
This is the last of my Pisanello sketch collection, but I hope to discover more of his work to share. He was unknown to me until recently and quickly sketched his way into my top faves. Don’t forget to take a look at Pt. 1 & Pt. 2 as well.
I love this style. Reminds me of Da Vinci’s drawings. I love the textures going on behind the actual drawing.
I love how real they look in some aspects, and in others, maintain an illustrative tone.
