Horse Breeds From Ethiopia
It’s Friday and we are visiting another country of the world to see all of the amazing horse breeds it’s given rise to. Looking at each breed in the context of their origins is absolutely an interesting ride. Today a look at the breeds from Ethiopia.
Old & In Danger
Ethiopia is home to the oldest feral horse population in Africa and the only wild horses left in east Africa, the Kundudo. Generally speaking, domestic horses are not well suited to the climate of many African countries, the asses and zebras fare far better on this continent. This wild herd is descendant of proud animals once used by royalty in battle, but today they battle to continue their own existance.

The Big Horse Paintings
Today’s video is a short documentary about equine artist Nicola Russell who spent two years painting Europe’s biggest horse painting. Interesting!
Capture A Legend
The painting is of a famous Irish racehorse named Istabraq, and the canvas was 10 feet by 3 feet. The subject of this large undertaking was voted on by the Irish public, and Istabraq won as the nation’s favorite race horse of the last 25 years. Istabraq was a racehorse bred to run flat courses, and wasn’t very good at it. It was later discovered that he had an insatiable appetite for hurdling, where he went on to prove himself a champion.

Flaxen Horse Breeds
We’ve already taken a look at breeds that are primarily chestnut, grey, bay and black. Today we take it one step further and visit flaxen breeds, chestnut bases with lovely blonde mane & tail hair.
Uncommonly Blonde
The flaxen modifying gene is somewhat of a mystery as far as genetics go. It only affects chestnut based horses by displaying a creamy white mane & tail. Unlike some of the more common colors, this genetic combination doesn’t affect all breeds – many of the breeds below only come in flaxen.

Modern Changes
This is a relatively flat country with a rather mild climate, not a bad one for equines. Like most places, horses were traditionally used for transportation and agriculture so individual breed numbers flourished at one time or another. However, as inefficient horses are phased out of agriculture entirely, the breeds developed for the task are facing a bleak outlook.

Horse in Nepal
Today’s video is short and not very exciting (sorry), but I found it to be interesting nonetheless. Much of my motivation for writing this site is to learn more about horse cultures from all over the planet.
A Brief Glimpse
While many of us think of our horses as our pets, as athletes or simply as our passion, we don’t often think of them as a way to get to work. However there are still places where horses are still perhaps the most reliable form of transportation. Nepal is one of those places, and here is a brief look into their world.

The Horses of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
Rembrandt was a Dutch baroque painter and etcher during the early half of the 17th century. He is the most well known Dutch artist and generally considered one of the greatest painters out of Europe during the Baroque period.
Man of Many Talents
Rembrandt came from a well to do family and started his artistic career painting portraits. He quickly became successful and began to do quite well for himself. Unfortunately his spending habits had a tendency to be even larger than his income so he was frequently in financial trouble.

Good Things in Little Packages
The UK in general is known for their riding ponies of all shapes and sizes – the variety is almost endless. Perhaps one of the most colorful found in England is the British Spotted Pony. This spotted little fellow doesn’t come from appaloosa horses, but rather thought to be a native to the British Isles. In fact, spotted ponies may have been there before mankind ourselves.
