Breeds of the Week – Aralusian, Ardennes & Arenberg-Nordkirchener

Heart Globe It’s that time again, horse breed Thursday and today we have a great variety to share, although sadly one of them is facing extinction.

Pleased to Introduce

The breeds for this week are an interesting & distinct bunch, from the Aralusian who embodies the blood of two ancient breeds (Arabian & Andalusian), the strong & handsome Ardennes and the highly endangered Arenberg-Nordkirchener

Part of the reason I work so hard on the breeds section is to share information & hopefully help circumvent the loss of any more horse breeds to extinction.

Horse Games for Nintendo DS

Last week it was games for the wii and this week a long list for the (much) more popular handheld Nintendo DS.

There are tons of horsey options for the DS, all of them offering a fun new pet and hours of entertainment. Some of the games are suitable for an older crowd while still others are better for the youngsters. Each one provides a link to where they can be found on Amazon and a brief description.

You can’t take your horse with you everywhere you go, but you can take the next best thing, your DS.

Iwona Jankowski Revisited

Gloves Tuesday is artist appreciation day & today it’s all about the work of Iwona Jenkowski. Although I didn’t find her on Twitter, she and I connected through the website.

Artist of the Week

Today’s artist paints bold, colorful horses and in between vibrant splashes of color she creates animals that are both detailed & lifelike. Not a horse owner (as of last time we talked) but she is an equal opportunity horse lover and appreciates them all.

Transportation Specialist – Horse Jobs

This is a rather unique position within the horse industry & one that allows for a great deal of flexibility. The experience required for being a horse transport specialist must include four wheels (& sometimes even 2 wings) as well as four legs.

Changing Gears

There is a higher percentage of men in this field of the horse industry, especially in long haul aspects of it. Horse owners have a number of different reasons for needing horse transport which requires a high level of adaptability on the part of the transporter.

This requires a knowledge of travel options and the connections to ensure each animal has a good experience and gets where they need to be.

How To Care For Hooves

Basic hoof care can be the difference between a sound horse and a perpetually lame one. Regardless of your skill level, keeping your horses feet clean and well-trimmed is an essential duty that should be taken seriously.

First things first, a good farrier (and a good trim every 6 weeks or so) is paramount when it comes to hoof health, whether you opt for shoes or not. The video below offers you tips for keeping your horse’s feet in good shape between trims.

Horse Games for Nintendo wii

The recent vein of horse games has been a lot of fun, so I thought I’d continue everyone’s playing time. Here is a list of horse games for Nintendo wii (don’t worry, I’ll add ’em as I find ’em).

There isn’t as great a variety as there is for the Nintendo DS or even PCs, but in my experience with wii almost any game can be addictive. In fact, one of these games is the only video game ever to be licensed by the Federation Equestre Internationale. Each game is accompanied by a link to where it can be found on Amazon and a brief description.

Everyone loves a good video game and the Nintendo wii is one of the greatest game consoles ever, if you can’t get outside to ride this is an entertaining second.

Todays artist paints animals that not only evoke a sense of personality but a sense of movement as well. It’s almost as if she is providing quick snapshots into their lives. Karen loves all horses equally, but happens to have a soft spot for Quarter Horses.

Horse Sitter – Horse Jobs

This is perhaps one of the most flexible horse jobs of them all and also one of the most important. Often horses are just part of the deal and many animal sitters must have experience with any number of friendly pets.

Watching Other People’s Pets

This is a career which demands a lot of hands on time with the animals, as well as effective communication skills with their owners. This is a position which benefits from strength of character, a flexible attitude and the ability to think quick & be versatile.

Other than experience with animals there is no real tangible skill set for being an animal sitter. Regardless of the type of animal, each one has its own personality and own specific care requirements.

Fatal Horse Diseases

This is a quick clip but it covers some important information & a great jumping off point, a place to gather information for further research.

All horse owners should have basic knowledge of the diseases that can be fatal to their animals. Don’t let it scare you, the more you know the better armed you are to deal with any number of problems & intimate knowledge of your horse is essential.

Familiarity with your animals regular behavior & habits help you notice out of place symptoms & off behavior.
