Dominant White Pinto Horses

A look at dominant white pinto horses around the world and on a variety of different patterns.

Dominant white is essentially a blanket term used for different genetics that create pure (or almost) pure white animals. Several of the pinto patterns can produce almost pure white coats. When there is little body color left on an animal, it’s difficult to visually identify which pattern it came from, so there are several patterns represented in the examples below. Often pintos are found with at least one blue eye and pink skinned white areas making them perhaps the most difficult to distinguish from a double cream animal.

Sabino White

One form of dominant white is found in the sabino family of patterns and sometimes called sabino white. This is a dominant gene and similar to human piebaldism, animals can be totally white and are often considered ‘true whites’.

Overo Lethal White Syndrome

The overo pattern family can also produce pure white animals. However there is danger for breeders, as homozygous overo animals are born pure white but also with fatal intestinal tract abnormalities.
