A look at appaloosa horses with white sclera around the world and on a variety of different breeds.
Also called walleyed or wild eyed, animals with an appaloosa white pattern will often display a white sclera of the eye. Not all appaloosas show this trait, so it’s not an identifying factor, but is commonly enough found. Other colors can also have this trait, but it is almost always associated with a white facial marking around or over the eye.
It is unclear if white sclera has anything to do with the appaloosas susceptibility to Moon Blindness, the most common form of blindness in equines. Affecting total population of horses and mules at about 12%, but appaloosas specifically at 25% (Quarter Horses being the second most frequent).
