Marble or Varnish Roan Appaloosa Horses

A look at marble or varnish roan appaloosa horses around the world and on a variety of different breeds.

Beautiful appaloosas come in an almost endless variety of spotting patterns, but can be categorized into several types based on the amount of white in the coat. Varnish roan may look like roan or even grey, but are not the result of the roan white pattern or a grey modifier. Like greys, animals with these patterns are born the base color (often with some spotting) beginning to blur or fade as they age. Animals often retain their base color over bony parts and the lightest area tends to be over the hips. This is perhaps the most commonly found appaloosa pattern and can mix with other types.
