Beautiful appaloosas come in an almost endless variety of spotting patterns, but can be categorized into several types based on the amount of white in the coat. White patterning that extends up to the withers is called blanket and within the Appaloosa breed there are several classifications depending on how large the blanket is. For color purposes, they are roughly the same and can be just a splotch on the hindquarters or even extend down and under the belly. Blankets with spots of base color in the white field differ from snowcap blankets, which have no spots.
