Horses with Chubari Marks or Tetrarch Spots

A look at horses with chubari marks or Tetrarch spots around the world mostly on Thoroughbreds.

Chubari spots are a rare marking not associated with any of the horse white patterns and found almost exclusively on grey animals. They can appear and sometimes fade away, changing with the seasons.

Chubari Characteristics

Larger than birdcatchers, chubari marks are usually the shape and size of an egg. As the animal greys out, obviously they blend into the rest of the coat, so they are only found on younger dapple or fleabitten animals. This occurs especially in Thoroughbreds and most of the horses that have them are from the lineage of Tetrarch, an English racehorse during the early 20th century. For this reason they are sometimes called Tetrarch spots.
