Tokara Pony

Intro

Also called the Tokara Kyusu, Kagoshima, Kuyshu and Miyazki the Tokara pony comes from the Tokara Islands in Japan.

It is believed that the Kitaiga people brought 10 native ponies to Tokara from their island in 1897 to use for agriculture and transport. By 1943 the breed reached their highest numbers (100 head) but the second World War decimated their numbers.

They were essentially first discovered, recorded and named in 1950 by Dr. Shigeyuki Hayashida.
