Intro
Also called the Tokara Kyusu, Kagoshima, Kuyshu & Miyazki the Tokara pony comes from the Tokara Islands in Japan.
Origins
It is believed that the Kitaiga people brought 10 native ponies to Tokara from their island in 1897 to use for agriculture & transport. By 1943 the breed reached their highest numbers (100 head) but the second World War decimated their numbers.
They were essentially first discovered, recorded & named in 1950 by Dr. Shigeyuki Hayashida.
