Intro
The Tawleed is a relatively new sport horse that was developed in the Khartoum region of Sudan, they were created by breeding Sudan Country-Bred horses with Thoroughbreds and other exotic breeds.
Origins
Sudanese Country-Bred animals are Dongala crossed with Thoroughbred and Arabian, both known for improving bloodlines in breeds worldwide. Equestrian traditions have always been a part of life in Sudan, however their preference for stallions and lack of centralized breeding programs mean their horses are a mixed bag of genetics.
Horse racing has long been a popular sport in many places and Dongala strains of questionable quality aren’t bred for speed. Bringing in larger, faster and finer genetics was inevitable and it seems at some point in the 20th century more controlled breeding began to take place. This seems to be happening particularly in the Khartoum region, where horse races are held. Tawleed Horses are the product of Sudan Country-Bred crossed again, probably with more of the same in an attempt to harness Thoroughbred speed without sacrificing a hardy desert nature.
