Tajik Riding Horse

Intro

The Tadzhikskaya Verkhovaya or Tajik Riding Horse was a saddle type bred for about 30 years under the USSR.

Origins

A combination of Arabian, Thoroughbred and Lokai among other breeds. Essentially this is a sport horse breed to dome degree as they were bred for a local sport called kokpar (buzkashi in neighboring countries). This is a very old, but highly athletic (albeit brutal) game that requires smart and athletic horses.

Generally the animals used for this game have some Mongolian influence, the sturdy little ponies are well suited for the play. It is likely, in addition to the lighter breeds mentioned above that Mongolian animals were introduced into the bloodlines once the USSR ended their breeding programs. There is no data regarding their numbers in the DAD-IS, although they are not listed as extinct. It’s likely when the studs were closed, animals made their way into the local population where their genetics persisted.
