SA Quarter Horse

Intro

Many of the working breeds of horse found in South Africa are imported to the area. Whether it was the 17th century or the 21st. It is unclear at what point American Quarter Horses were imported, but likely in the 20th century to work cattle.

Origins

Quarter Horses are perhaps the most popular breed of horse found in the United States, known for their kind attitude and aggressiveness working cattle. Popular wherever cows need to be managed, it’s no surprise they made their way to South Africa.

There are a variety of Quarter Horse studs in the country, but their registry calls them American Quarter Horses. They are listed as a locally adapted breed in the DAD-IS, so they seem to have been in the country long enough for local conditions to have made a mark.
