Intro
The Panje or Panjeskaya is a descendant of the Polish Konik horse and shares bloodlines with a group of small horses including the Hucul and Albanian.
Origins
Although the Panje carries some Konik blood, it is not a large enough percentage to be included in Konik breeding programs. They have been crossed with Arabian, trotter and Belgian Draft blood to increase their agricultural working ability.
The 20th century saw a large decline in the use of horses for agriculture and during this time the Panje became less important to the locals, so their numbers declined. Today they are primarily used as riding horses.
