Intro
The Padang Pony comes from the island of Sumatra in Indonesia and is similar to the other pony breeds found in Indonesia including the Bali, Java and Timor.
Origins
Horses have been in Indonesia since around the 7th century and are mostly of Chinese or Mongolian descent. Centuries in a climate so different from Mongolia has shaped these tough little animals to the area and changed their physical characteristics. In addition, imports including Arabian, Thoroughbred and possibly some Dutch breeds have played a part in influencing the animals found on the islands.
This breed is not listed in the DAD-IS, so is possibly a variant of one of the ‘official’ breeds of the country. Indonesia does not appear to have any centrally controlled studbooks or breed management, so local areas on each island may breed them to type for specific needs.
