Intro
We could find very little about the Nogai Horse except that is is one of the steppe breeds found in the north of Dagestan. They don’t appear to be listed in the DAD-IS, however they are likely a strain of Dagestan Pony.
Origins
As with many of the breeds that come from the steppe areas, they are essential to the local people as transportation and herding as well as a source of food and milk. They were essential in the creation of the Kabardian breed. There are few formal breeding programs for the animals in the area, many of them are left semi-feral allowing nature to do her work. While this breeds resiliant animals, they tend to be coarser looking.
