Origins
The Lombok pony comes from the Indonesian island of Lombok and is very similar to the Macassar pony which is found in Sulawesi. The island was known for exporting their ponies to other islands during the 16th century and the Lombok probably has close ties to Java Ponies as the islands traded horses.
Origins
While their origins are shrouded in mystery, the Lombok is likely of Chinese or Mongolian descent, with other bloodlines peppered in over the years. Dutch settlers exported the ponies and it’s likely they were involved with breeding as well, perhaps adding Dutch blood to the breed. In fact, Lombok was so known for their horse export that their livestock boats were fitted to transport horses. In the mid 19th century ‘English’ animals were imported (presumably Thoroughbred), which would add refinement to the rougher Asian conformation found in many of the ponies of the islands.
Market Crash
By the turn of the 20th century exports had dwindled and by the 1920s Lombok animals had lost favor everywhere except Java which continued their pony trade. Some of the other islands were breeding finer ponies that took over the export market.
