Landais Pony

Intro

The Landais Pony comes from the region of Landes in the southwest of France. They are known for being a fine pony that looks similar to a mini Arabian.

Origins

This is a native breed that has been there since prehistoric times. They are thought to be descendants of the Tarpan, but Arabian blood was introduced in the 8th century & later early in the 20th century.

In 1946 the Landais was crossed with a number of larger animals in an effort to produce a more robust animal. Unfortunately this also diluted an ancient bloodline, leaving very few pure individuals. Luckily the French government stepped in and is attempting to preserve the breed using Arabian & Welsh Section B stallions sparingly to regenerate population. The breed is currently in danger.
