Intro
The Landais Pony comes from the region of Landes in the southwest of France. They are known for being a fine pony that looks similar to a mini Arabian.
Origins
This is a native breed that has been there since prehistoric times. They are thought to be descendants of the Tarpan, but Arabian blood was introduced in the 8th century and later early in the 20th century.
In 1946 the Landais was crossed with a number of larger animals in an effort to produce a more robust animal. Unfortunately this also diluted an ancient bloodlines, leaving very few pure individuals. Luckily the French government stepped in and is attempting to preserve the breed using Arabian and Welsh Section B stallions sparingly to regenerate population. The breed is currently in danger.
