Intro
Also called Kushmakaya, the Kushum breed was developed in the Ural mountain region of Kazakhstan from 1931 to 1976.
Origins
The goal of this breeding program was to produce war mounts well suited to living in herds year round. Native Kazakh mares were crossed with Thoroughbreds, halfbreds and trotters for size. Special care was taken to retain the hardiness and adaptability of the Kazakh breed.
