Hebridean Pony

Intro

Also called Western Isles Pony, the Hebridean Pony is an extinct pony breed. An original variety of the Highland pony with older characteristics. There were several localized strains of this pony, the only surviving one being Eriskay Pony.

Origins

Thought to come from ancient Celtic and Norse origin, these ponies are related and similar in appearance) to other small northern breeds, like those found in the Faeroes or Iceland. It is unclear which of them developed first, but they developed localized characteristics everywhere they are found.

The ponies thrived in this island habitat until the 19th century, when cross breeding began to increase. There were roughly five types, Barra, Mull, Rhum, Skye, Uist, but pure bloodlines were crossed into extinction. Thankfully the remote island of Eriskay was difficult to access and didn’t have enough natural resources to sustain larger types. Due to this other breeds were not introduced, leaving the island stock to remain pure. Keeping some of the Hebridean genetics and characteristics alive.
