Intro
Also called Klassiek Gelderlander paard, the Dutch Classic Gelderlander is not to be confused with the Gelderland of KWPN registry. They have an independent studbook, Klassiek Gelderlander Paarden Stamboek (KGPS) that was established in 2019.
Origins
The Gelderlander breed has been around since the late 19th century, originally bred from Anglo-Norman, Holstein, Oldenburger and East Friesian to native Gelderland mares. The resulting animal was as good for riding as it was for pulling a plow.
After the mid 20th century, their numbers dwindled but luckily survived. Today the registry’s goal is to produce a warmblood horse with similar adaptability. To be registered, animals must possess at least 75% Classic Gelderlander blood. Keeping their bloodlines actually true to breed type, which is a bit different than most warmblood registries. While the KWPN version focuses on producing sport animals, the KGBS cares more about preserving the heritage of agricultural animals in the Netherlands.
