Breeds of horse found in Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia. There are roughly 2.2 million horses in Ethiopia, which is over half the horse population on the African continent. Although the Ethiopian government only reports numbers for the Abyssinian breed, in 2012 eight distinct types were identified, including an endangered feral population.

Selale or Oromo Horse

The Selale or Oromo horse is found in central Ethiopia and are particularly known as good riding mounts. They have an interesting past, deeply connected to the history of the country itself. The Selale name comes from the area where they are found and Oromo are the people who keep them.

Found in the tropical rain forest and coffee farming areas in the Kafa-Sheka zone of southwestern Ethiopia, the Kafa horse is indispensable to the people that live there. They are primarily used as pack animals, carrying spices and coffee from remote inaccessible farmlands to highways and markets for distribution.

Thought to be an incredibly old breed of horse, the Borana horse comes and is named for the Borana zone in southern Ethiopia. There is not much documentation about the breed, but scientists have begun to study them in an attempt at characterization.

Intro

The Bale is a typical pony type horse of Ethiopia, coarse in conformation and built for the highland conditions where they live and work. This breed is used primarily for transport and as pack animals, mainly in the Bale mountains on the eastern side of the great rift valley.
