Intro
The Belgian Heavy Draft horse bloodlines date back to 1870 and while their numbers have fluctuated and they are vulnerable, they manage to hold on.
Origins
Early heavy animals were imported in the late 19th century, but after a few decades the need for them declined and breeding was discontinued. Later, in 1953 the breed made a comeback when the state implemented labour-cooperative farms. This created the need for a strong animal with great pulling power and a calm demeanor. The Belgian Draft is based on Russian Draft animals with other bloodlines added for specific characteristics. Not only is their foundation sturdy, the breed is raised free range and are easy keepers.
In the 1990s state stud farms were liquidated and sold to private enterprise. Today the breed is vulnerable and according to the DAD-IS as of 2024 there were 4856 left.
