Intro
Named for the Powiat of Bilgoraj, the Bilgoraj horse is a light draft breed which is likely related to the Tarpan. They are closely related to both the Konik and Huçul.
Origins
Thought to be a descendant of the extinct Tarpan the roots of this breed are likely lost to the sands of time. Their foundation were among the handful of actually wild horses on the planet. There seem to have been some official breeding programs in the Lublin Voivodeship and at one point Fjord blood was added, but the combination didn’t seem to take.
Many seem to lump them into the Konik breed, but they appear to be slightly distinct and may be called a strain. Today the Bilgoraj is considered very rare and might be in danger of extinction.
