Axios horse

Intro

The Axios horse is a native feral breed named for the Axios Delta in Greek Macedonia. They are closely related to the more well-known Pindos and Thessalian breeds.

Origins

These feral herds come from robust work animals abandoned by local farmers late in the 20th century. The Axios Delta is a rich wetland, providing ample forage for the herds to survive and procreate. Over time the area was made into a national park, keeping the wetlands safe and providing a protected habitat for a variety of wildlife (including the feral kind).

While initially able to thrive, the herds remained small enough that they had trouble supporting themselves and in 2010 there were fewer than 100 left. They appear to have become a bit of a tourist attraction, they are forced to compete with local cattle farmers for resources. Not to mention the capture of breeding mares by the locals.
