Intro
The Paint Horse originated in the United States as a performance type color breed and are often bred exclusively for their spotted pattern.
Origins
The pinto genetics were thought to have come to the Americas via Iberian animals. Their flashy spotting patterns were an instant hit with both settlers and the native population alike.
Distinctive Spots
While there are a variety of different breeds which carry pinto spotting patterns, Paint horses must be either Thoroughbred or Quarter Horse to register.
The American Paint stud only accepts animals with overo or tobiano patterns, though it seems Australian Paints are open to most of the pinto patterns (they are all different genetically).
