Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I grew up outside of San Francisco, California. My first horse lived behind my house in a 100 acre pasture owned by the water company. If I wasn’t at a horse show, you could find me riding in the Oakland hills or on Mount Diablo. After Journalism school I worked in the public relations industry until I jumped the media fence and became a professional travel writer and lodging editor.

I live in the Goshen area in northern Indiana close to Notre Dame on a 75 acre horse farm.

The Horses of James Ward

James Ward started off in the family business as an engraver and was later appreciated for his English Romantic painting. He was largely influenced by his interest in engraving as well as the artwork of Paul Rubens during his career.

An Animal Lover

James became known as an animal & landscape artists and his strong appreciation for the form of animals is evident throughout his artwork. He was a driven artist and created a number of portraits, landscapes and history paintings – many of which were later engraved.

Mr. Ward’s art is thought to effortlessly reflect the grace & charm of the Romantic era through technical skill and artistry.

Sadly, this is one great artist who was not appreciated in life as he is today. He died in poverty not long after a stroke ended his work in 1855.

ZJ The Zorse

Click to see VideoZorses are such strange creatures – half horse, half zebra, which one do they identify with? They are an animal we don’t often expect to see in domesticated situations.

ZJ is too cute not to share, this is one zorse that seems to identify more with its horse roots.

Meet The Equidae Family – Zebras

Most people recognize a zebra when they see one. Black & white stripes pretty much covers it right? There is a lot more variety than you might think.

Last week we met the more colorful Equus & Asinus members of the family, but today it’s all about the black & white. Because of their unique striping patterns the taxonomy of zebra species has been difficult at best & there is a lot of conflicting information out there.

Not only are their stripe patterns regional, but like fingerprints, no two zebras have the same stripes.

Sadly many of the zebra species are facing troubled times in their native territories. Due to hunting (for those beautiful coats) and habitat destruction.
