Jockey – Horse Jobs

Racehorse running around a track

Being a jockey is not just about basking in the joy of the winners circle, it is a dangerous labor intensive position which requires a great deal of experience and knowledge.

What You Need

This is a position which benefits from strength of character, excellent riding skills and a firm understanding of the racing industry. Jockeys must work with a variety of people including horse owners, trainers, exercise riders and a variety of barn staff.

Extensive horse experience, a small (but strong) stature and a fearless ability to think fast are all traits of a successful jockey. With few exceptions this is perhaps one of the most dangerous horse jobs.

Urban Horses

A city is a terrible place to keep a horse, but for one reason or another too many of them seem to end up there.

Many of them work pulling tourist carriages, others as police horses and still others provide transportation.

Missing The Countryside?

Regardless of the reason they are there, there is always something decidedly melancholy about a horse in the city.

These photographers did a great job of capturing the plight of the urban horse.

Horse Pictures From Bhutan

Bhutan flag
Bhutan is an interesting horse area, the animals are used in large part for work and agriculture.

In the late 1960’s & 70’s the Austrian government sent several small herds of Haflinger horses to Bhutan to work on a Swiss farm. However the Haflinger was found to be unsuitable for the local people, they were too large and not surefooted enough for the terrain.

More recently, in 2000 a small heard of Spiti horses were imported to begin a trial breeding program. The Spiti has similar characteristics to local animals and it is hoped they will be better suited to the needs of the locals.

American Bashkir – Horse Breed of The Week

American Bashkir

Image from Equine Now

Perhaps most well known for their lovely long, curly coat of hair, the American Bashkir horse is a breed shrouded in the unknown. The existance of a horse with the *curly* gene in North America is a mystery.

Their bloodlines are clearly the same as the Bashkir horse native to the Ural mountains. Animals with curly coats were discovered in America in the early 19th century.

Rearing Horses in Motion

Horse Rearing

There is something so very majestic about a horse when they rear up onto their hind legs. It takes their great size to a whole new level and essentially forces you to show some respect & pay attention.

Horses In Motion

I really enjoyed putting together this horses in motion series, dedicated to horses moving everywhere.

With so many disciplines and types of horse, it seems the movement possibilities are endless.

Moving Right Along…

So far, I’ve covered horses playing & bucking and there are plenty more where that came from.

Racetrack Trainer – Horse Jobs

Man standing with a spirited racehorse

The term horse trainer can apply to any discipline and a good trainer will usually stick to one discipline or another. Racetrack trainers spend a great deal of time with each animal in their care, they must know their charges inside and out to maximize their performance on the track.

What You Need

This is a position which benefits from attention to detail, the ability to juggle multiple tasks and management experience. Racetrack trainers must work with a variety of people during their day, owners, jockeys, training riders, vets and farriers to name a few.
