The Horses of Peter Nicolai Arbo

Peter Nicolai Arbo was a Norwegian artist well known for chronicling Norwegian history and Norse mythology in his work. The romance of this theme can be found in almost all of his art, however it is his battle scenes & valiant warrior portraits that really shine through in his work.

Finding His Legs

As a student he studied at the Düsseldorf School of Art under Karl Ferdinand Sohn who was an animal & battle painter. Karl’s work clearly had an affect on young Peter who went on to paint similar motifs.

Although the subjects of his art aren’t the specifically horses, his attention to detail and sheer passion for all of his subjects is clear.

Where I am
Tamarack Farm, Bessemer, Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I was raised a mile from where I live now. My parents farmed the forty acres we live on now. I was raised on a dairy and beef farm and have had a horse since I was nine. My one interest has always been horses. Other girls did girl things as a teenager. I rode and read everything I could about horses. There was always more to learn, and I still think that way. I am married and have five grown children and five grandchildren, plus one on the way.

12 Reasons to Boycott the Circus

Circus Elephant

As an animal lover, it’s hard to know where to draw the line when it comes to animals in entertainment. Circuses have almost always been criticized for their treatment of animals & after doing research for this post, I’ll not visit another one.

Not A Good Message

Many of the animals used in this type of entertainment are facing extinction in the wild. What kind of message are we delivering to our youth if we continue to cage wild animals and force them to perform tricks for our amusement?

Great Racehorses

Racehorse

Image from Rennett Stowe

Some of the most celebrated equine athletes have been famous racehorses. The heart, courage & determination of just one Thoroughbred has been known to provide enough inspiration to fill up entire countries at a time.

Over the past two years I’ve only written a few articles about famous racehorses, but as I revisit old posts I create new ideas.

A Few of The Greats

For now, why not learn a little more about the greats I have covered? Sadly, most of their stories end tragically. As is often the case, stars that shine the brightest generally burn out young.

Phar Lap | Seabiscuit | Secretariat

*I’ll add to this list as I write more posts about the giant heart that seems to accompany all great racehorses.
