Drum horses have been used in various European countries for centuries, often in pageantry associated with royalty. The American Drum Horse is based on a deep foundation of strict breeding practices and high quality genetics.
A Little Backstory
A relatively new breed in the US, Drum animals have traditionally been purpose bred for size, strength and temperament. They needed to be large and strong to carry a rider in full regalia with a pair of kettle drums. Working around crowds of people and tolerating the drum noise requires a very steady mount. Complicated by the fact that drummers use reins attached to their stirrups to leave their hands free. A drum horse required a level of stoicism that doesn’t come naturally to horses.

The American strain of this noble breed takes advantage of their fantastic temperament, using them more for riding or as competition animals, where they excel both under saddle and in harness.
What Makes Them Special
Their careful breeding can’t be overstated. An animal of prey which can keep themselves calm during such hectic and noisy pageantry is a rare gem indeed. Their flashy feathering and handsome pinto patterns make for handsome show horses and striking driving teams. At the end of the day, it’s what’s on the inside that counts and Drums clearly have a heart of gold. To learn more about them, be sure to check out the American Drum breed page.
