Like poodles, the American Curly Horse is hypoallergenic, those allergic to pet dander are not typically bothered by this type of coat. Interestingly enough, there are two types, one of which sheds it’s curls out for the summer.

A Little Backstory

This breed used to be called American Bashkir horses, however there has been debate about whether the curly gene even comes from Bashkir genetics. Animals displaying the characteristics were discovered in the United States early in the 19th century. For many years is was assumed they came from Bashkir blood, however a study done in 2017 showed that the source was more likely the Lokai breed. Their results as to the actual source were inconclusive, however they found a Western Asian region that appears to be the cradle.

On North America, animals with these distinct characteristics were probably brought over during Russia’s occupation of Alaska during the 18th and 19th centuries. Like many animals in the Americas, once they had outlived their usefulness they were left to their own devices. The cost of shipping them home again was prohibitive. The genetics migrated down the Pacific coast towards warmer climates and were first documented in the lower 48 by Sioux tribes in their winter count of 1801.

What Makes Them Special

Their obvious display of survival of the fittest. The region of Western Asia where they are thought to originate has such extreme weather that animals with thick, curly coats flourished and bred. Anyone who knew horseflesh would want a closer look at such a unique type and it’s no surprise their genetics got around. Curly horses are also generally extremely robust and able to withstand pasturing outside during winter months. If their unique hairstyles and hardy nature aren’t enough, they also have the distinction of being a feral breed of North America that comes from the Russians.
