The handsome Alter Real or Royal breed of Alter is as it’s name says a royal breed. When a crown gets involved in horse breeding, generally results include incredibly fine horseflesh. Alter Real animals do not disappoint.
A Little Backstory
Originating in the small town of Alter do Chão, when King João V established a stud to breed fine riding horses. A herd of Andalusian mares was established, selected based on fine conformation and bay or brown coats. From these mares came a new breed, beautiful enough to grace the elaborate stud that was built to house them. From their stock also comes the modern Lusitano breed.
While traditionally Alter Real animals are bay or brown, they can be found in other colors. The grey examples pictured are from the Alter do Chão stud.
What Makes Them Special
During the early 20th century Portugal renounced their monarchy, putting the stud in jeopardy. Many stallions were gelded when the government ceased breeding programs (which may explain the grey genetics) but luckily a few slipped through. This small nucleus went on to be privately managed until they were handed back over to the government for safekeeping. Their small herd continues to thrive today.
