An equine veterinarian is prepping for an extraordinary challenge, she is joining a pioneering horseback journey across the Andes.
The Long Walk
Dr Emily Floyd, clinical director and internal medicine specialist at Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons, will be part of a six‑woman team taking on the ‘Ride to Independence’ expedition in February. She is supporting Steph Quintrell, founder of Equine Para‑Adventures (EPA), in her bid to become the first para‑equestrian to cross the Andes on horseback.
The route will span approximately 88 miles (143 km) over seven days, starting in Argentina and finishing in Chile. The group will follow the historic path once used by General José de San Martín and his army in 1817. Traversing high mountain trails, they will ride native Peruvian paso and Chilean Criollo horses, with pack mules carrying gear and camping equipment.
Do it for Steph
Dr Floyd says she’s both “excited and terrified” about the challenge, which will push the team through steep ascents, rocky terrain, altitude changes and extreme weather. Steph Quintrell’s story is already an inspiration in the equestrian world. After losing mobility in 2019 due to a neurological condition, she became the first wheelchair user to ride across the Pyrenees from France to Spain.
Do it for Steph
In preparation for the Andes, the team has been training on challenging Welsh terrain, ensuring both riders and horses are ready for the demanding environment ahead. Dr Floyd has also been raising funds to support the expedition through vet‑led webinars and community events, with additional backing from VetPartners’ charity fund. Any surplus raised will go to support Equine Para‑Adventures.
Our Historic Bond
This remarkable journey celebrates the bond between rider and horse and highlights how equestrian pursuits continue to break new ground, even in the most remote and rugged landscapes. For horse lovers and riders everywhere, it’s a powerful reminder that courage and partnership with our equine companions can take us further than we ever imagined.
