Pardon the poor quality of today’s image, but it is too special not to share. Not only is this an image of Eleanor Roosevelt in Tivoli, New York during 1894 (she was 10) but the photographer was none other than Franklin D. Roosevelt himself.
Why We Like It
Mostly because of the famous photographer as the image itself is not spectacular. But Eleanor has an interesting story as well, the niece of Teddy Roosevelt, by 15 she had lost both parents and a brother and her future husband was her fifth cousin once removed. This union made her the longest serving first lady and she is known for redefining the role of First Lady during Roosevelt’s presidency (FDR served from 1933 to 1945). After their marriage ended, she remained involved with politics for the rest of her life.
