This photograph was taken in 1899 in France at the The Poule d’Essai des Poulains, which is still run today.
Why We Like It
Obviously it’s not a great shot, but it’s really, really old. What interests us most is the jockey’s posture, long stirrup leathers, legs held in front of them and an upright seat. Almost polar opposite to what we see today used by modern jockeys, with their knees tucked up almost under their chin.
To illustrate this point, while appreciating the longstanding equestrian traditions of France. The image below was taken at the 2024 Poule d’Essai des Poulains.
