Archer Family Portrait – Horse Image of the Week

A family in a carriage in front of a building
This week we visit Australia, where they have a long history with the camera. To our delight, we found a lot of antique horse images from down under.

Why We Like It

This image was taken of the Archer family in front of the Brisbane military barracks in 1870. This family was among the first settlers in Queensland. Naturally they were adventurers and spent a lot of time exploring their magnificent now continent. People in old photographs tend to look very serious, but it’s likely the Archer’s were full of vigor and rarely stood still long enough to have a photo taken. The horses look healthy and their clothing is fantastic, the Archers most certainly weren’t poor.
