Another antique horse image to share today, it seems that early horse photography was reserved mostly for military men. The photography isn’t great, but it’s an interesting peek into history.
Why We Like it
Like last week, this image was taken in 1864, but today’s photo features General Ulysses S. Grant and his horse, Cincinnati (sometimes called Cincinnatus). Together they served in the war and while he was a great warhorse, Cincinnati was known for his placid manner. Which is probably good because he was a monster at 17 hands tall. After the war, Grant was offered a large sum of money for his wartime mount, which he refused. The pair grew old together and Cincinnati gave up the ghost to old age at Admiral Daniel Ammen’s farm in Maryland.
