Adopting A Horse

This started out as a guest post and blossomed into an interview. Thanks to Juli & Elle over at HorseNet Horse Rescue for answering my adoption questions & allowing me to share them.

HorseNet HorsesHow soon after you rescue are the animals available for adoption?
Adoption of the horses depends on their condition when they come in – not only physically, but mentally as well. There may be training issues but there may be emotional issues that need to be dealt with as well. A horse that comes in healthy physically may need a specific type of person to work with them – both temperment wise, and riding wise.

What types of horses do you have available?
HorseNet Horse Rescue has many horses available for adoption. Some are ridable, and some are companion only. We don’t sell horses, but rather adopt them out to suitable and approved homes.

Western Terminology – Roping

There is a lot of lingo & terminology dedicated to the world of western horse shows. We’ve broken the show world down into smaller sub-categories to cover it in finer detail. Here is a list of common terminology used in the world of roping.

Bridle Catch
A catch where the rope hangs in the steers mouth.

Breaking the Barrier
Breaking the rope or electronic eye barrier before being released. This adds a 10 second penalty on the contestant’s time.

Alexander The Great & Bucephalus

Alexander the Great CoinThe story of Alexander the Great and Bucephalus is one that every horse lover should know. In fact, The Black Stallion is loosely based on this story of boy taming beast.

The Story Goes Like This…

Philonicus the Thessalian brought Bucephalus to Philip II (Alexander’s father) in the hopes of selling him. But when they went to the field to try him, he reared and bucked and would not have a rider.

Philip wasn’t happy with Philonicus for bringing him such a mount and declared that the horse was unsuitable and useless.

Making Organic Liquid Castile Soap

Castile soap originated in the Castile region of Spain and was made from local olive oil. The term has evolved to encompass soap made from vegetable-based oils.

Products made from Castile soap do not use animal products (ew, tallow) as a softening agent. This means they biodegrade faster and require less from Mother Earth to be made.

Animal and Earth Friendly Lifestyle Guide

Although I’ve managed to track down a number of great green horse products and feed, I wanted to provide resources for products we use and consume when we aren’t on our horses too.

The Price We Pay

As animal lovers and owners we have a responsibility to animals everywhere to use products that have the least amount of impact on the environment and the critters that depend on it.

The Good Things Never Are…

I’m not saying it’s an easy commitment but it is one that everyone needs to make before it’s too late. I’m here to help and I’ve tracked down a number of great companies who make everything from cleaning products, to socks to makeup.

*Some of the websites carry more products than just the categories I’ve put them in – why not browse a little?
