Everything you need to know about exploring horse breeds around the world

Getting Started

BreedsMap is an interactive 3D globe that showcases horse breeds from around the world. Each marker on the globe represents a horse breed's country of origin, allowing you to explore the rich diversity of equine heritage across different regions and cultures.

The project is powered by The Equinest, a comprehensive resource for horse breed information.

Navigating the globe is intuitive:

  • Click and drag to rotate the globe in any direction
  • Scroll to zoom in and out
  • Click on a marker to view detailed information about that breed
  • Hover over a marker to see the breed name

The globe will slowly auto-rotate when idle, giving you a gentle tour of breed locations worldwide.

Use the search bar at the top of the screen to find any breed by name. As you type, suggestions will appear showing matching breeds along with their country of origin.

Click on a suggestion to fly directly to that breed's location on the globe and view its full details.

Features

Yes! Click the microphone icon in the search bar to activate voice search. Simply speak the name of the breed you're looking for.

As you speak, matching suggestions will appear. When you see the breed you want, say "go" to select the first result and fly to its location.

Note: Voice search requires microphone permissions and works best in Chrome, Edge, and Safari browsers.

Each breed profile includes:

  • Name and Origin – The breed's name and where it originated
  • Description – Background and history of the breed
  • Physical Traits – Average height and coat colors
  • Characteristics – Temperament and common uses
  • Conservation Status – Population health indicator
  • Photo – Representative image of the breed

Click "Learn more" in any breed popup to visit the full breed profile on The Equinest.

Conservation status indicates the population health of each breed:

Critical At Risk Recovering Extinct

  • Critical – Fewer than 200 annual registrations or less than 2,000 global population
  • At Risk – Declining population, requires monitoring and conservation efforts
  • Recovering – Population is stable or increasing thanks to conservation
  • Extinct – No living members of the breed remain

When you search for and select a breed, its marker will display a pulsing white ring to help you identify it on the globe. This is especially helpful when there are multiple breeds in close proximity.

The highlight automatically fades after a few seconds.

Technical

BreedsMap works best on modern browsers that support WebGL:

  • Google Chrome (recommended)
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari

For the best experience, ensure your browser and graphics drivers are up to date. Voice search requires Chrome, Edge, or Safari.

If the globe doesn't load, try these steps:

  • Refresh the page
  • Check that WebGL is enabled in your browser settings
  • Try a different browser (Chrome recommended)
  • Ensure hardware acceleration is enabled
  • Update your graphics drivers

Some older devices or integrated graphics may have limited WebGL support.

All breed information is sourced from The Equinest, a comprehensive database dedicated to documenting horse breeds worldwide.

The database includes nearly 1,000 horse breeds, from well-known breeds like the Arabian and Thoroughbred to rare and endangered breeds from remote regions.
