The Litang Horse Festival is a summertime festival held in the village of Letang in the Sichuan province of China. This celebration is generally held during the first week of August & people come from all around southern China & Tibet to trade, celebrate and ride.
Of Cultural Importance
Not just important for horses, this festival helps establish a social hierarchy within the Khampas (nomadic herders of the area) & local prestige comes form owning the best animals.
This is a celebration of horsemanship with demonstrations of prowess and races ridden on Tibetan ponies
Attracting an Audience
This celebration has become quite a tourist attraction for those visiting the area. This is said to fuel the local economy and allow participants a larger crowd. The participants, however have yet to voice their opinion.
