As we update the site, our breeds section has already had a major overhaul and we are still adding new information, images and videos for each breed. Today we wanted to share the brand new breeds from Burkina Faso category, including two new breeds.
Reliable Information
There is very little documentation (in English anyway) about the breeds for many of the African countries and Burkina Faso is the same. Some of the West African countries do not keep centralized stud books or provide official numbers for each breed, so what we learn about them is through studies conducted and independent sources online.
Historical Horse
The government of Burkina Faso may not prioritize their horses, but the people do. There is a very strong and long horse culture in the country. For example, their national football team is called Les Etalons (The Stallions) in homage to warrior princess Yennenga’s legendary horse.
This princess is considered the mother of the Mossi people and the legend goes that the princess grew tired of the kingdom her father founded and fled on her horse. Along the way she met a hunter called RialĂ© and they had a child that they named Ouedraogo. Today this name is a common surname in Burkina Faso and translates to ‘male horse or stallion’ in honor of the horse that led Yennenga to RialĂ©, founding the Mossi kingdom.
Meet the Breeds of Burkina Faso
There are only two breeds in this country and in reality they are similar. Probably the Bobo horse is named so to delineate between it and horses of the Mossi.
Handsome Animals
This is a West African country whose equestrian tradition shines through in the animals themselves. Finding images in some of the West African countries can be heartbreaking, but the horses in Burkina Faso look healthy and well-tended, likely from their longstanding traditions.
