Horse cultures can be found in all corners of the globe and it’s important that we preserve them. The onslaught of mechanization during the 20th century redefined our relationship with this noble animal. We want to celebrate all horse cultures of he world, even if we find some of them disagreeable.
Not Many Horses
There are few, if any horse breeds native to island nations. Generally they were imported for work, warfare or transportation. The Bahamas may be more known for beach pigs than they are for their horses. There was one official breed found on Great Abaco island, but unfortunately they have gone extinct.

Breeds of The Bahamas
It is unfortunate that the only breed once found on these islands is now gone. Luckily their unique genetics have been preserved for study. Their ancestors are thought to have been brought to the area originally by the Spanish in late 15th or early 16th centuries. Due to extreme physical isolation, their bloodlines remained extremely pure. This small gene pool eventually being their downfall.
this is amazing!
