Some forms of horse culture are truly interesting and it’s truly impressive to still find a tradition from the late 15th century still alive and well today.
The Cold Reality
Shrimp fishing on horseback in Belgium sounds (and looks) super romantic, but in truth it’s probably sort of cold and miserable. But look at those horses! Ever wonder what they still use the Brabant Draft horse for in modern days, look no further. Even more interesting is to find a tradition that involves riding such an enormous draft animal. Notice the specialized saddles and the pillows!
Recognized in History
In fact, this lovely tradition has been given Intangible Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO. Carried on twice a week by 12 households in Oostduinkerke, West Flanders, Belgium. Each family specializing in a specific element of the task, from net weaving to horse knowledge, in what is essentially a living museum.
Appreciated in Art
Such an enduring tradition is bound to have artwork celebrating it and here are some examples to show how important some traditions can be to a place and its people.
