Equine Champagne Gene

Perlino Champagne Dun

In the last 20 years, DNA testing technology has become both equally complicated and commonplace.

Pair this ease of genetic testing with a rage for horses of exotic and unusual colors and the result has been previously unknown locations of the equine genome. One of these genes has been labeled the champagne gene due to its very unique phenotype (what the horse actually looks like).

Defining The Unknown

Champagne colored horses have no doubt existed prior to genetic testing, but were often registered as a more common color such as palomino simply because that was the closest known match. After seeing a champagne horse it is easy to understand the confusion. In an effort to more accurately trace the champagne gene, The International Champagne Horse Registry was created. This registry has mapped the likely history of the equine champagne gene in addition to documenting known champagne horses.

Home At Last Sanctuary

I’ll always be interested in helping promote those who do good things for horses and almost any rescue or sanctuary falls under that category. This week I’m pleased to present a guest post by Donna over at the Home At Last Sanctuary about their establishment.

Jim & DonnaJim and I are retired educators and we both faced and survived life threatening issues- breast cancer for me and a terrible auto accident for Jim. In 2004 to celebrate our recoveries we decided to get a mule. We had horses in our younger days, but it had been over 20 years since we had them.

How We Started

We found a mule- May Belle- at The Sunshine Sanctuary in Los Molinas CA. When May Belle arrive she came with two surprises- Jessie, another mule, and Sweet, a Kiger mustang. We were thrilled. Within a few weeks we started getting calls about taking old, injured or unwanted horses.

It is my pleasure to announce my very first guest post. Thanks to John over at Care 4 Horses for taking the time to put it together and share his knowledge with us

.

Farrier ToolsEver worry about lameness to your horse? You should, let me explain why.

Keeping Them Sound

I’m a Farrier in the Bay Area, California for 18 years now; my claim to fame is I haven’t had one single lame horse due to my method of shoeing during those 18 years.

When I graduated horseshoeing school even though I graduated at the top of the class when I walked out the doors I knew (I could just feel it) there was something seriously missing in the education I got there. The school I attended is noted as the “Best in the World”.
